Q: Do you think you could briefly explain how the pen tool works?
A: Pen tool in photoshop gives is very good for laying block / solid colors before you being painting them. It can also give you the effect like the ones you see in Anime. There are several options for the Pen tool. Click and hold the pen icon in the toolbar and select Freeform Pen tool (your default Pen tool won't work XD) and draw whatever solid shape you want. However, this shape that you just drew, cannot be painted on with the brush tool. What you must to do to paint on it, is to create a new blank layer under this shape. Then you select the shape you drew with the pen and you press Ctrl E to merge the shape and the blank layer. Now you can paint on it
